Foods that are high in iodine are seaweed's, especially kelp, seafood, saltwater
fish, and trace amounts are found in asparagus, garlic, lima beans, sea salt,
sesame seeds, summer squash and many other foods. If someone has an
underactive thyroid they should be careful about eating large amounts of peaches, cabbage, kale, turnips, etc.as they can actually block the uptake of iodine.
Because we eat so many cooked foods, and our food is grown on depleted soil
(especially here in the USA), we are lacking many trace minerals in our diet. Kelp is a
great way to obtain these important trace minerals, such as iodine and
vitamins, in particular B vitamins. Use kelp in place of table salt and
pepper in recipes.

Drink lots of WATER! 8-10 glasses at least - distilled is best. Our bodies are 75% water, and our brain is 80% water! Stress causes dehydration ~ and dehydration causes stress.
Eat lots of Fruits and Vegetables - the majority should be eaten raw. Try to find
organically grown whenever possible. There is more nutrition in foods that are
organically grown, plus we don't need the addition of harmful pesticides in our system!
Whole grains - oats, brown rice, barley, couscous, etc. Read labels carefully
on breads especially. It must say 100% whole wheat and eat no more than 2 slices of bread daily.
Legumes and Beans - split peas, lentils, kidney beans, navy beans, etc.
Nuts/Seeds - Almonds are the easiest to digest and sunflower seeds are excellent, too. Sesame seeds and almonds are good sources of calcium in your diet. Make sure you buy them raw, and again organic if possible. These are high in
fat and protein so use in moderation. Peanuts are hazardous to your health, do not include them in your diet.
Sprouts - try sprouting different seeds such as red clover, radish, broccoli and cabbage. I like to make up a mix. I use them in sandwiches and salads. You will get live enzymes, and increased nutritional benefits. These are much easier to digest
as well.
Flax seed oil or cold-pressed virgin olive oil - 1-2 Tbs a day. I now use UDO's Choice to get my Essential Fatty Acids and use freshly ground flax seeds in my shakes or sprinkled in cereal.
I also drink 4-6 glasses of freshly prepared Juices a day - carrot/apple and
1 orange juice. These contain enzymes and anti-oxidants that we need. I use 1-2 heaping
Tbs. of Aim's Barleygreen with kelp in my juices. It's a whole food, not a supplement, and it's organically grown. Wheatgrass is even better if you have a juicer that can juice wheatgrass.
Include kelp in your diet to obtain iodine. According to Daniel Mowrey, PhD, the Japanese people have practically no
thyroid disease due to consuming large amounts of kelp in their diet, but for the
Japanese who have adopted a Western diet (SAD) thyroid disease is on the
rise. Iodine helps metabolize excess fats and prevents goiter as its needed
for healthy thyroid function. So one of its medicinal uses is in obesity as
the thyroid gland controls the metabolism. Iodine deficiency has been linked
to breast cancer, fatigue and weight gain.

Foods to Avoid
Eliminate all sugar, white flour, artificial sweetners such as Equal, soft drinks,
caffeine, alcohol and processed foods from your diet. These are so detrimental to
us when we are ill. Did you know that when we consume sugar our immune
system is suppressed for approximately 4 hours? I was a huge fan of sugar before my illnesses. Eating right has taken away all my unnatural cravings for sugar that I once battled with.
Eliminate dairy products ~ I use Rice Dream brand rice milk on my
hot cereal or dehydrated granola and really like it. It's super easy to digest. I suffered from hives all of my adult
life and after eliminating all dairy I have never had them since! I was on daily meds for seven years due to chronic hives and haven't had to take them for over 3 years now!
No red meat ~ particularly if you have HepC. Many studies show
that iron actually causes the HepC virus to replicate faster. Check cereal labels for iron
content as well. (This is more important for men and post-menopausal women)
Other Things That are Very Beneficial
Fresh air and sunlight - get as much fresh air as possible, bundle up and open
a window, go for an easy walk if possible, and sit outdoors in the sun and breathe
deeply if you cannot walk due to fatigue. I try to get 1/2 hr to 1 hr a day
of sunlight. Sunlight helps depression, boosts the immune system, lowers
cholesterol and will provide you with the Vitamin D you need too. Enjoy God's creation.
Bible study/Prayer - Spend an hour a day in reading God's word and
praying for others.
Benevolence - Pray for others needs. Don't be self-centered. Send someone a card, or make a phone call to brighten
someone's day! When we do for others we end up being blessed too.
Rest - this is so important and one that believe it or not I have
the most trouble with! After being confined to bed for so long, I fight lying down each day for
rest, even though I so desperately need it. Also, getting to bed by 9 or 9:30 pm is important
because when we are sleeping our bodies are able to do their healing work. Did you know that healing
hormones are released between 10 pm and 2 am!
Trust in God - God knows how to get you well. Trust your Creator -
Trust is Faith. Learn to know God. Read the Healing Promises.
Attitude of Gratitude - When we hang onto unforgiveness and
resentment or anger it actually causes illnesses. Be thankful to God. Feed your mind with good
things (Phil. 4:8) Having a positive attitude is vital.

I believe that these are a must to get started and to be successful (along with total reliance on the Lord!). We must stay educated. You can do what I have done....purchase one book a month if that's all you can afford. Keep reading and learning so you'll know why it's important to do the above list of things. :-)
