WELCOME TO FERN'S HOMESTEAD!

God loves a cheerful giver

This our son is stubborn and rebellious,
he will not obey our voice;
he is a glutton, and a drunkard.

Deut. 21:20

I'd like to share a little Word study with you on the sensitive topic of GLUTTONY. Back in my 20's I had an eating disorder. I didn't realize it at that time, but I was doing some serious damage to my body! I would binge and then fast. I was not able to purge, hard as I tried, so was not bulimic, but I would go without food for days after a binge. Then the cycle would continue. My eating was out of control, in particular when I was facing anything stressful. I was so depressed about this hidden *problem*.

When I found Yeshua (Jesus) at the age of 40, I still had this tendency to binge when faced with stressful events. It was not frequently as it was in my 20's, but I NEVER fasted as I discovered this would trigger a bingeing cycle.

When I fell ill at age 43, and began to learn what health vs. being thin meant, and about eating raw foods, I wondered about the verses in Scriptures regarding "gluttony" and thought I'd do a little word study to see exactly what was meant by excessive eating and gluttony. Was I a glutton?! I had been overeating man-made, adulterated foods and I certainly felt the Ruach Ha Kodesh (Holy Spirit) convicting me of my sin in this area. I cried and repented before my Abba for abusing my body. I asked Him to show me how to properly care for this precious body/temple He had created and redeemed. A good portion of my website is to share what He has taught me in the hopes that others won't have to suffer as I did for so long.

Here is a little bit of what I discovered.

Bear-y Big Meal

A Glutton is one who indulges to excess in eating. If we look up Gluttony it says..."extravagant indulgence of the appetite for food; voracity of appetite." (Noah Webster 1828)

Ungers Bible Dictionary defines a Glutton as "a free liver; one who is unrestrained."

According to Noah's 1828 dictionary,
"EXCESS is going beyond a point ~ beyond necessity or wants. In morals it means any indulgence of appetite, passion that goes beyond the rules of God's Word."

EXTRAVAGANT literally means "wandering beyond limits; excessive."

INDULGE is "not to restrain; not to check or restrain the will, the appetite or desire ~ yield to the enjoyment or practice without restraint or control."

APPETITE is a "desire for food or drink; a painful sensation occasioned by hunger or thirst. There are natural and artificial appetites ~ such as hunger, thirst which are natural. Tobacco, chocolate, olives, etc., are artificial appetites."

Voracity is "greediness of appetite. Voracious means to devour...ravenous."

When HaShem told man that he may eat freely from every tree of the garden He means *plentifully* and *abundantly*, according to Noah's 1828. No counting calories or restricting certain foods, in their natural state as created by Abba. Eating freely from His Garden is not gluttony.

I eat as much fruit and vegetables as I want every day. I never feel guilt over how much I eat when I eat from Abba's Garden either. It's an interesting phenomenon that I can't overeat on those, but give me something man made such as processed foods, and it becomes much more difficult to stop eating. I'm sure this is true for all of us. Processed foods are highly addictive as they are refined and devoid of nutrition or fiber that our body must have each day, and so we crave more and more to satisfy that need. However, it doesn't happen, so we continue to eat and eat. I was so addicted to sugar in my 20's that I wanted nothing else. I developed hypoglycemia as a result. Our body was designed by our Creator to eat sweets.....but in the form of whole, raw fruits and vegetables, and even whole grains.

Don't be among ones drinking too much wine,
or those who gorge themselves on meat:
for the drunkard and the glutton shall become poor;
and drowsiness clothes them in rags.

Proverbs 23:20-21

I hope this helps define for you, as it did for me, the line for us between eating freely of the foods HaShem has given to us as compared to being a glutton.......going BEYOND our needs.

Let's pray........

Holy One, help us all to only desire the foods that YOU created...that You designed for our bodies....for truly YOU are the only One who knows what our bodies require. You are our Great Physician, our Healer. Help us to resist the temptations of this world and to care for our temples. In Yeshua's Name. Ameyn.
