In simple humility, let our Gardener, Yeshua,
We *finally* have our newly remodeled kitchen completed!! Praise Yah! It took 6 weeks longer than anticipated so it was a real challenge!! I’ve never had a brand new kitchen before, so I can’t tell you how much pleasure it is bringing to our family! Especially after being without a kitchen for two whole months! As I was unpacking boxes of dishes and finding just the right cozy spot for everything and adding cheery country touches here and there, I realized how much our kitchen is really the heart of our home. I’m sure you’ll agree ladies as keepers of the home and hearth, this is where we labor in love for our family every day. So it is on this theme that I’d like to start out our first newsletter by sharing with you how to set up your own healthy kitchen so that you can prepare meals that will both nourish and delight the senses. May Adonai bless your hands as you set about your kitchen and lovingly prepare nutritious culinary delights for your family each and every day. May your hearts be filled with JOY and a new song be in your heart as you go about your kitchen tasks as unto Adonai dear ladies.
ESSENTIAL KITCHEN SERVANTS(c) Mrs. Fern Guyer, CNH In order to prepare healthy meals for our family, we need the right tools to work with to lighten our load. I refer to them as my kitchen servants! *smile* As most of you know, I believe that in order to have healthy bodies, we need to eat a certain amount of foods in their natural state~ as our Creator designed them for us to eat. It is my opinion that we need a minimum of 65% raw foods in our diet each day, and optimally 85%. I believe we can all easily do this if we have the right tools in our kitchen to help us fulfill this goal. With help from our kitchen servants, we can provide variety to our menu to avoid burn-out. No one wants to eat salads, salads, salads, day in and day out. Let’s look at some appliances that I feel are a *must* in your healthy kitchen.
1. BLENDER~ You don’t need to go buy a Vitamix and spend hundreds of dollars. I have been using my Cuisinart 7 Speed blender for years now and it is still going strong and works very well for making our nut milks. If you can afford one of the pricier blenders, go for it as you’ll use it a lot, especially for smoothies! 2. DEHYDRATOR~ This is really a must to make raw granola, cookies, fruit rollups for the children, burgers, trail mix, crackers, and so much more. I recommend the Excalibur if you can afford it, but there are many other models out there to fit every budget. The thing to look for in the lower end models is a THERMOSTAT. You don’t want to dehydrate at temperatures above 118 degrees as enzymes begin to die. More on that in another issue. I set mine at 105-115, depending on what I’m dehydrating. Here is where I purchased my Excalibur. They have a good price and really FAST delivery.
3. JUICER~ A good brand is a Champion or Omega. I’ve used both. I purchased a Green Life juicer a couple of years ago as I wanted to make wheatgrass juice as well as store my juices longer than the other models could. Choose one that is within your budget and work your way up if you can. 4. FOOD PROCESSOR~ I have a Cuisinart and just love it. This gets used so much that it has a permanent home on my kitchen counter. Makes dips such as hummus, cheeses, all the mixes you will make for dehydrated foods, and even ice cream can be made in a food processor. Get a good one, the lower end models really don’t work well. 5. COFFEE GRINDER~ I use this handy tool almost daily. They cost about $15.00. They grind nuts, flax seeds, etc. effortlessly. 6. KNIVES AND CUTTING BOARD ~ Sharp knives will cut your prep time in half and make chopping and dicing a joy. I prefer to use a large wooden cutting board that has a stainless steel container insert, so I can just whisk the stems, seeds, etc, right into it as I work. Makes clean up a snap. 7. SALAD SPINNER ~ Not a necessity, but makes the task of salad making easier. Dry lettuce will stretch the budget because you will use less dressing. The oil will cling to dry lettuce, so you use less. No one likes a soggy salad anyway. Another frugal option is to roll your greens in tea towels after washing, to dry. 8. GLASS JARS AND BOWLS~ Food tastes better in glass rather than plastic. When making juices you will want to store them in glass canning jars (8 oz.) too. With my Green Life, juices will store in these air-tight glass jars for up to 72 hours. You will use larger jars for dressings, sauces, etc. 9. SPIRAL SLICER ~ These little gadgets make raw spiraled *spaghetti* out of squashes, carrots, sweet potatoes, etc. 10. BREADMAKER: I highly recommend the Zojirushi model. Since we use whole grains in our baking, this model is designed to handle the task of whole grain baking better than any other home model I know of. I purchased mine from Ebay, but you can do a search online to find the best deal. It is worth the money if you bake your own bread! The Zoji also makes jam and bakes cakes, as well as having a *Home Made* setting to customize your baking, and a Crust Control setting. It has a horizontal baking pan and makes 2# loaves effortlessly. 11. CROCKPOT: I have 2 crockpots, one large and one medium sized. I highly suggest you have at least one. These are super to make healthy and nourishing soups and broths. You can even bake potatoes in them! And in the summer they won't heat up your kitchen. 12. GARLIC PRESS: A very inexpensive little gadget that really gets a work out in our home. Garlic is a natural antibiotic. 13. FLOUR MILL: We have the Grain Master Whisper Mill and grind our whole grains into flour quickly and easily for making our homemade breads. The Whisper Mill will also grind beans for making instant refried beans, and bean flours, along with garbanzo beans for instant hummus! Having these kitchen servants will enable you to have all the necessary tools needed to make delicious and nutritious raw foods for you and your family!
